So I decided to join Pinterest after reading this sweet blog post by Justine Musk about using the social media thingamabob to create a “visionboard.” Yeah, the word is a little hokey, but I’m using it anyway.
If you haven’t been distracted by Pinterest yet, you might be better off. Mostly people use the site to “pin” photos of stuff they want: hairdos, green pillows, baby platypuses, coffee mugs. This doesn’t appeal to me.
Musk, however, is using Pinterest to make a collage to help her think visually about her work-in-progress, a novel called The Decadents. “A strong, clear vision that resonates with you emotionally can act like a kind of motivational tractor beam,” Musk says. “It pulls you along. It pulls you in.”
I decided to give it a try. It’s early days, but I think it’s helping me visualize setting and character. It’s an interesting experiment in the very least. If you’re curious, check out what I have so far here, or join Pinterest yourself. C’mon, there’s no such thing as too many social media platforms.
